Our Keynote Speaker:
Valarie Kaur

creator, writer and producer of
Divided We Fall
Americans in the Aftermath

Valarie Kaur Background

Driven to action by the murder of a turbaned man in her
community, Valarie Kaur, a third generation Sikh American born and raised in California, drives across America in the aftermath of 9/11 to discover stories that did not make the evening news. From the still-shocked streets of Ground Zero to the desert towns of the American West, Valarie's inspiring journey uncovers remarkable stories of hate violence, fear, and unspeakable loss, and examines the larger question of "who counts" as an American.

Five years in the making, Divided We Fall deftly explores race, religion, and identity in times of national crisis. The documentary has received international acclaim and Valarie has been invited as an authority on the subject at more
than one hundred universities, colleges, and
religious centers across the country.

She has been featured in print, radio and television media including CNN, NPR, the BBC, and Frances Moore Lappe's book You Have the Power: Choosing Courage in a Culture of Fear. The State of California recently presented Valarie with an official commendation recognizing her work as a scholar, activist, and storyteller. Valarie presently serves as founding director of the Discrimination and National Security Initiative at the Harvard Pluralism Project.

Sponsored by Friends of Iowa Civil Rights, Inc. ("Friends"), an independent non-profit corporation, Iowa's Mosaic Diversity Conference is the premier statewide training and networking opportunity for those interested in human diversity. It offers career development, professional and personal growth, and will provide all participants unique opportunities to learn more about the wealth of diversity that exists in Iowa and strategies to benefit from this diversity in their personal lives, work and communities. An exhibition hall will provide participants the chance to learn more about businesses, organizations, agencies and others who advocate, embrace, and provide products or services related to various aspects of diversity.

The Diversity Conference Committee would like to acknowledge Artist Andy Chenchar for his work on the Conference logo.
